          RACE DAY

If you are racing at another school - have a good time. Not much to do except get your boat ready to sail.

If your school is the host, there are some things your club will need to do.

Set course.  Tossing the marks out from shore has been the way most clubs have set them          for many years. Tossing them out from shore usually does not allow you to set up a good                course, though, because you may never get the course set perpendicular to the wind.   If your       club has access to a rowboat, that will work although a little awkward.  So far, we have found         that the Tugster Tugboat is the answer.

  •     Call the line.  When the count-down clock sounds the start of the race, there should be one person who can see down the starting line to call "All Clear" or, if a boat goes over the start line before the clock sounds, call the number of that boat - "Number 74 over early". 74 will then have to go back and start again. There may be more than one boat over early. If there are too many boats to go early, call a general recall and start the race over. Again, there should be only one person making this call and his call is final.

  •     At the finish line, there should be person who calls the finish order of the boats and a second person standing right next to the Caller, to write down the order of finish.  We use the "Afleet" app to keep score.  Really easy to use. Can download this app from the AMYA site.

  •     Penalty turns.  Read the Rule Book to know when there is a Penalty Turn needed.  Touching a mark is one time.  A boat is not allowed to touch a mark when going around them.  If it does the skipper has to take one - 360 degree penalty turn.  This is also true at the Finish line.

  •     The person in charge of your regatta is your sponsor or someone else designated by your sponsor.  It should be clear that everyone knows who that person is.  There can be only one person in charge.
