How To Make..

       Marks

Marks (buoys) are what you put in the water that defines the race course.  There are at least four of them for every race. Two are used for the Start / Finnish Line, one is used for the Windward mark (upwind from the Starting Line), and one is used for the Leeward mark (downwind from the Starting line).  There are many ways to set up a course.  You can see how a course might be laid out by looking in the 2021 - 2024 World Sailing Racing Rules of Sailing book.  In our region, most of the courses are simply set with Start / Finish line, one windward, and one leeward mark. As the number of sailboats in race increase, you may want to use an Off-Set mark.

Pictured here are just two types of marks we use in the Detroit area.  The yellow one on the right  is simply a 5-inch diameter rubber ball you can get on-line.  The orange one is 3-D printed.  You could even paint a toilet bowl float for a mark.  Use your imagination.
